Coolcanals lay claim to fame as probably the tiniest publishing company in the world, housed in the bow of a travelling narrowboat. Martine and Phillippa have been writing and publishing coolcanals books since 2009, and have attracted an extraordinary amount of national media coverage in the newspapers, TV and radio. This summer, the two women were honoured to be asked to produce a special edition of one of their books to help the charity fundraising campaign of the new 'national trust' for Britain's canals and rivers, the Canal & River Trust. "2012 is turning out to be a hectic year for us. I think the real appeal of our books is that we don't rely on secondary resources - we are two women who live on a narrowboat and are incorrigible explorers, addictively walking the towpaths everywhere from Cornwall to Scotland too. And we aren't embarrassed to show how much we care about the living heritage of Britain's canals. Traditionally, in the book publishing industry, the two words together, 'canals' and 'heritage', might evoke a male gendered response, but we dust away that out-of-date stereotype and celebrate living canals as they are today, with their fantastically exciting context at the heart of British history. Canals are a national treasure and that's the message we want to carry in our books." Coolcanals brand new book for this year tells the remarkable story of Britain's canals past, present and future. From their own travels Martine and Phillippa uncover some of the 100 treasures of Britain's canals, and they ask TV personality, Julia Bradbury, along with the Chairman and Head of Heritage of the new Canal & River Trust and other experts to pick their favourites too. The two women confess that moving lock, stock and barrel onto a narrowboat shell with the intention of building the interior themselves at the same time as travelling the water and running coolcanals isn't the easiest way to run a publishing business. But from the start, coolcanals didn't aim to follow iron rules. Martine and Phillippa say sawdust on the laptop is par-for-the-course and the boat is getting built in traditional slow canal time. They will carry on building the boat in between writing and publishing their books, "as long as we've got a crate to sit on and a kettle on the stove, we're happy". Martine & Phillippa say they are extremely excited to play their small part in helping to support the canals and are "honoured" to have been asked to create a special edition of one of their books 'Cool canals Weekend Walks' for the new Canal & River Trust, to offer supporters as a gift when they join as a 'friend'. July marks a momentous new era for Britain's canals as 2,000 miles of inland waterways transfer to charity status.
